Upcycling – Creating Treasures For Your Kitchen
5th February 2015
Upcycle (verb): “To reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.”
Perhaps ironically, the trend of upcycling is at an all-time high. While we all crave the latest in technological advancements, there is a notable, and growing, interest in the business of revamping our old goods. There seems to be at least two discernible reasons for this movement: Firstly, in recent years, the importance of recycling has been made abundantly clear to us. The three R’s (reduce – reuse – recycle) have been firmly established as a code of conduct and the concept of environmental responsibility has become highly individualised.
While this in part explains the trend, there is definitely more to the art of upcycling. For a lot of us, it seems to be a creative outlet; an opportunity to stamp our own unique look on our decor. This approach has become heightened within modern interior design as terms such as “rustic”, “vintage” and “shabby-chic” seem to dominate our language. It is no longer mandatory for our colours and materials to perfectly match and there’s much greater scope for individual personality. In the kitchen especially, we’re seeing huge potential for the movement in terms of accessorising and storage.
We’re very much on board with the concept of upcycling at Dream Doors. After all, by reusing existing kitchen units and simply refacing them, our service not only saves our customers thousands of pounds, it also significantly reduces any environmental impact. Our eco-friendly approach to kitchen makeovers has been a huge selling point for us and we continue to foster the motto “Why replace when you can reface?” in our daily business.
Although we could show you endless examples of upcycling in the kitchen space, we decided to pick out a few of our favourite and more achievable crafts and projects. We are highly indebted to Pinterest for these ideas and salute all those behind these ingenious works of art!
Light installations – old kitchen utensils such as whisks, colanders and funnels can make for the most beautiful lighting.
Storage – where function meets fashion.
Backsplashes – who would’ve thought corks and bottle caps could be so useful? Think before you throw away these gems!
Decor – plants in jars, forks in frames. It all seems so simple! Add a unique touch to your decor using these everyday items.
