Think Outside The (Cabinet) Box

Storage space is a precious commodity, especially when it comes to the kitchen. With more gadgets and ingredients than ever, it’s becoming seemingly impossible to find every item “a home”. This has become an even bigger problem in the rise of the “tiny house movement.” The average new British home is now just 925 square feet – barely half the size they were in the 1920s. This means we have to be more resourceful and inventive than ever when it comes to utilising space in the kitchen.

Our kitchen cabinets account for the majority of storage space in our kitchens – so let’s consider how we might better use these. While we at Dream Doors have umpteen solutions to every kind of storage problem, there are a few sneaky things you can do to maximise what you have. Instead of the traditional thinking of “inside” the cabinets, let’s take a look outside the box:

1. Use the space below your kitchen cabinets:

By creating an additional shelf directly below the cabinets, you can give yourself a whole new area to play with. It is especially handy when it comes to items we use on a regular basis such as herbs and spices and our daily dose of caffeine.

2. Use the space above your kitchen cabinets:

We all have that awkward space between the top of our kitchen cabinets and the ceiling – a dust collector of sorts. Why not put this gap to use? Using boxes or baskets, you can neatly store away the items that you may not readily need access to. Not only does it fill this void, it also becomes a useful spot to hide away some of that unnecessary clutter.

3. Use the inside of your cabinet doors:

We’re back inside the box, but this time we’re making use of the space in it’s entirety. Just think of the number of cabinet doors you have and how much scope there is for storage. They can easily and neatly contain jars and bottled goods as well as those pesky chopping boards.

4. Use the inside of your cabinet doors:

Using some hooks or even a towel rack, you can easily turn the side of your cabinet into an additional hanging space. Pots and pans are among the most difficult of kitchen supplies to store away — not to mention noisy. By casually hanging them by your cabinets, you can save yourself a lot of agro and, if you’re lucky enough to own such lovely bronzed utensils, you can at the same time create a delightful feature.

Not only are all these ideas inexpensive and completely effective, chances are they can be recreated by even the least handiest of us.
