Dream Doors Dark Grey

Dream Doors launches Opengrain Dark Grey and says 50 shades of grey is no longer shackled to the bedroom – it has broken free to find its natural bedfellow in the kitchen.

When it comes to choosing a new colour for your kitchen cabinets it’s no black and white decision.  Whereas once upon a time white was the most popular choice for kitchens, grey is rapidly rising in popularity.  To tap into the trend, kitchen makeover specialist Dream Doors has launched a new range Opengrain Dark Grey to keep up with demand.

Troy Tappenden, MD of Dream Doors explains what’s behind this fast-growing trend.  He says:

Grey has been prevalent in fashion for some time, and now we’re really noticing it become a staple in the kitchen.  Grey is a ‘new neutral’ – less sterile than white and less imposing and less masculine than black.  What’s more, it’s stylish, contemporary and easy to accessorise and works equally well with rich wooden or stainless steel worktops, granite or white.  Since it’s essentially a neutral colour it’s unlikely to date quickly and can be regularly accessorised to keep it fresh and modern.

  Top Tips for Grey Kitchens

  • Greys from across the spectrum can work well in a kitchen, but if you’re dead set on a dark grey shade it can become overbearing.  A good solution could be to introduce some white doors – (see Dream Doors Opengrain Dark Grey & White Venice kitchen above).  By breaking up the colour it offers a less overbearing, more modern, contemporary feel which is less industrial and more feminine than an all grey kitchen.

  • For people not brave enough to opt for a dark grey kitchen, a light grey hue (see Dream Doors Matt Dove Grey) can make all the difference, and work well contrasted with darker grey tiling and worktops.  Alternatively, grey countertops or splashbacks contrasted with a white kitchen can introduce a surprisingly contemporary feel to the hardest working room in the home.

  • Interestingly, The Guardian newspaper once described grey as the ‘drabbest colour in the palette’ but according to colour expert Karen Haller, featured in thedesignsheppard.com the increasing popularity of grey in the home can be simply explained.  She says, “grey doesn’t have a ‘personality’ of its own [so] it can be paired with any colour.  The key is to choose a grey that is from the same harmonious colour family as the rest of the colours you are using.  That way it will harmoniously resonate and not jar or drain the other colours.”

  • Pink, tangerine, cobalt blue, crimson, red, yellow and neon green are all on-trend colours that can be used to accessorise a grey kitchen and really bring it to life.

  • Surprisingly, grey kitchens can also help to bring a smaller space to life.  By contrasting with light walls and pops of colour this can create a bold statement, transforming a compact room with a daring hue.

Move over black and white, it’s time to think in shades of grey for the kitchen.
